I’m a COD player through and through. I buy the game on an annual basis and I have a special love for it because it’s how I met my wife. Short version for anyone who doesn’t know: My soon to be wife and I played COD4 with a group of friends which ended up with us talking, video chatting, and then ultimately meeting during the span of about four to five months. We hit it off, and the rest is history. We both enjoy the game as we can play split screen on our sixty-inch TV, and it just holds a special place in our hearts. Okay, mushy stuff over. Every year before the dev of the current game releases a map pack, I do a state of the union for the current release. Think of it as “the honeymoon is over” type review to see if the game is still fun to play after around three months after the release. So?

The union is… not nearly as bad as it was last year that’s for sure (thanks Ghosts for being such a pile of garbage). While Advanced Warfare has made many strides in changing the formula (read: EXO suit) while keeping the base gameplay the way COD players want, there are a few issues with the game at the moment which keep it from being something that I can suggest to someone who might be on the fence about the game.

First up on the list is the ASM1. The ASM1 is a sub-machine gun in the game which received a buff (a buff is an upgrade for anyone not knowing FPS terms) because it wasn’t a formidable weapon to use when the game originally launched. Unfortunately, the gun is now the most used gun in the entire game as it is a freaking bullet hose and a death dealer. As of this writing I literally left a lobby not more than fifteen minutes ago where the entire enemy team was using this gun or a variant of it. For those not in the know, there are different gun variants which change stats from the base weapon you’re using. Some are good, some are bad. The ASM1 usually has more on the good side though.

From increased damage to increased fire rate, this gun has everything going on for it. So, why would this be an issue you might ask? Well, it completely outclasses all other guns with possibly the Sniper Rifle being the only exception just due to range and one shot kill potential. More often than not, if you’re not using an ASM1, then you’re gonna get your sh*t pushed in. As with other union addresses I always have a solution to the problem at hand (otherwise I wouldn’t bitch about it). All the guns need re-balancing plain and simple. I don’t think the ASM1 should be nerfed to the point where you can’t use it, but something has to give. When I get outclassed with an assault rifle at range where I should be winning a gun fight, we have a major problem. Luckily, the devs have gone on record to say that a patch is on the way with balancing tweaks which I hope will help tremendously.

Moving on.

Connection to host due to skill based matchmaking is up next. All COD’s since at least Black Ops 2 have had some sort of skill based matchmaking when paring you up in a lobby to play the game. The problem is no one can tell you how it really works. There is no formula out there that pairs player A with player B, because then people would specifically try to skew their stats in order to PWN NOOBS. The issue I have with it is the fact that there are games I’ll get into where the connection is AMAZING. If I point my gun at someone first then the chances are that I’m going to get that kill overall. Nine times out of ten I will win the game mode I’m playing when the connection is good. Side note, I do not consider myself to be a great COD player, I’m just average. Back to the topic at hand. What I want to know is… what the hell is up with the matchmaking?

The video that is linked from YouTuber Tmartn explains some of the recent comments by the lead studio head for Advanced Warfare, but I don’t agree with some of the comments that were made. I don’t want to be paired up with people of a similar skill at all. Give me connection first and foremost. While Michael Condrey says that the connection to the host is the most important aspect, I’m not buying it. More often than not I will enter a lobby where I just get SHREDDED by weapons without even being on screen in a lot of cases. Those ares host issues right there. My internet is 50 down, and 5 up and I don’t use any internet or torrents or anything whenever I play online. I want to ensure that my connection to the game/host is the best it can be. In Black Ops 1 (where SBMM is BARELY present) I would get host 8 times out of 10 and no one would glitch out or complain.

What I want is straight removal of the SBMM that is in place. I want straight top tier connection to the host. If you can’t give it to me, then I want to wait another thirty seconds. I might be in the minority here, but I want a fighting chance rather than getting into a game where I’m going to go 10-33 because the host is shit. I realize that this will NEVER happen, but it is an issue in my eyes none the less.

As for the rest of the union things are pretty good, honestly. Players are staying and playing more than with COD Ghosts, and apparently Kill Death ratios are up across the board (mine definitely isn’t, but I digress). If you were to ask me if I would suggest you buy it, my answer would still be a yes overall. The changes to the formula shake up how you play COD, and are a welcome change in this writer’s opinion.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go back to getting my ass kicked by an ASM1.

I didn’t play a lot of Ghosts. I’m curious to know why you hated it? I spent some time playing the alien survival mode but that was about it.

@ John Lusky – There is a general consensus across the COD community of why the game was so hated overall. First would have to be the single player and how it took ZERO chances in anything new. The story was very mediocre and by the numbers which felt like you were just slogging through the campaign for achievements/trophies and to just be finished with it. I finished it and **SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS** when the main antagonist of the game didn’t die after he died for literally the third time in the game I just didn’t give a shit about the story anymore or the setup that it gave you for Ghosts 2 (a title which might be the first COD since 2007 that I won’t buy).

Next, the multiplayer, oh god the multiplayer. Where to start? Maps. Maps were so fucking huge that it would take you forever to get across them, and when you did, you got sniped to only have to repeat the process. Don’t get me wrong, you can have big maps, but they have to be within reason. Stonehaven is a map that comes to mind when I talk about this. Maps were just so big or so cramped that it promoted camping like no other COD I’ve ever played. Spawn system. The spawn system in this game was incredibly broken. If I killed an enemy player he would be put into what is called a “revenge” spawn. Meaning, that the game would normally place him in a predetermined spot on the map that was close to my location so that he could try to get a payback kill. More often than not, this would lead to you getting shot in the back…. A LOT. Hit detection. This game was the fucking worse. I could have a red dot sight on an enemies head at stupid close range, and it wouldn’t give me the head shot. I would get hit by bullets when I was around corners (definitely not shot through the walls for example), and then instantly die. Speaking of instantly dying…. RAPID FRIGGIN’ DEATHS. This game was notorious for having a kill time that was insane. If you didn’t have your gun drawn and you ran up on someone, chances were you gonna die. While this sounds normal, it should be set up so that you could at least engage in a fire fight and then die so there is “gameplay”. LAG. This game had lag when Infinity Ward said that they had “dedicated servers”. I don’t care who you are or what you do, this game had fucking lag. You will always experience some lag playing online, but more often than not I would run into people skipping across the screen in 3 out of 10 matches that I came into. Lag = deaths and is no bueno. I can keep going, but I think the point has been made.

@Luke – No, but the exo-suit in Advance Warfare is pretty cool for movement. It’s nothing new in any respect, but it’s new to COD and how you move.
